Teacher Spotlight: Kate Smith

Our growing class list would be quite difficult to pull off without the awesome instructors we've been so honored to meet.  We'd like to give you the same opportunity to get to know our Chattery teachers a bit better.

So, here are four questions to help get to know our Introduction to Calligraphy instructor, Kate Smith.

How did you get started in calligraphy & hand lettering?

I've always loved drawing, painting and art supplies.  So, when my parents gave me a calligraphy set when I was 9, I was in heaven!  I started lettering seriously when my mother asked me to hand write the invitations to my little brother's wedding rehearsal dinner.  In Atlanta, I took classes from a very talented teacher and learned both Italic and Copperplate calligraphy.  I started doing projects for family and friends and my business grew organically by word of mouth until I moved to Chattanooga and started lettering full time.

Why do you love Chattanooga?

Chattanooga is a beautiful city, but the people who live here make it a wonderful city.  Ever since I moved here 5 years ago, I have felt welcomed.

What's the one topic you'd like to learn through The Chattery?

Only one?  Any craft is a good craft in my mind!  I think it would be great fun to learn lampwork glass bead making and maybe an Adobe Illustrator class would be good too.

What's something someone would be surprised to learn about you?

Before I was a full time calligrapher, I was a computer programmer in Atlanta.
