Introduction to Indigo Dyeing

  • Chattanooga WorkSpace 302 W 6th St (map)

Indigo dyeing is a magical chemical process that makes it the king of natural dyeing. In this introductory class, you will learn the basics of how to build and maintain an indigo vat with all natural ingredients. A few group vats will be provided to demonstrate this process and you will be given instructions and resources so you can easily recreate the experience in your own home. We will provide some test fabric for each participant to make their own lightweight scarf, but feel free to bring your own shirts, scarves, and other fabric to experiment with!

About the teacher:

Ongeleigh Underwood is the owner of Temperate, a women clothing line using all natural dyes and American grown cotton. She is an advocate for strengthening the local fiber community through Fibershed and spends her days traveling to regional fiber farms, dyeing, or sewing.

**Also, stay tuned for the "Natural Dyeing: From Harvesting to Color" full workshop in July!

Natural Dyeing : From Harvesting to Color

Revert to a more simple time when color for clothing, rugs, uniforms, curtains and more came from ancient plant dyeing recipes. In this 2 day workshop, you will learn how to identify several native natural dyes and the best practices for harvesting and extracting them. We will forage together in some of the best spots around Chattanooga, then spend the rest of the time learning about the mordanting process and experimenting with different colors and dye techniques.
