Teacher Spotlight: Sara Salyer

Our growing class list would be quite difficult to pull off without the awesome instructors we've been so honored to meet.  We'd like to give you the same opportunity to get to know our Chattery teachers a bit better.

So, here are four questions to help get to know Sara Salyer, owner of Moss + Elm, a local textile company. She'll be leading an Intro to Indigo Dyeing class on Saturday, August 15. Tickets here.

How did you get started in your profession?

I grew up in a family that enjoyed gardening so I was exposed to it at a very young age. A few years ago I worked on an organic farm and it was at that time that I decided I would explore natural dyeing techniques. I went to the library and checked out every book available on the subject. Did some online research and then bought the supplies needed for my first indigo dyeing trial. I instantly fell in love with the process from start to finish and Moss + Elm was born!

Why do you love Chattanooga?

I love Chattanooga because of its convenience. If I want to be downtown I am five minutes away and if I choose to go for a hike in the woods I am ten minutes away. I have lived in Chattanooga for 28 years now and I have seen it grow into the city that it is today. It's just wonderful! It's also really great to see so many local artists in one area come together and share their creative ideas and support with others.

What's one topic you'd like to learn through The Chattery?

Loom weaving.

What's something someone would be surprised to learn about you?

I have webbed toes and I am left handed!
