Teacher Spotlight: Ongeleigh Underwood

Our growing class list would be quite difficult to pull off without the awesome instructors we've been so honored to meet.  We'd like to give you the same opportunity to get to know our Chattery teachers a bit better.

So, here are four questions to help get to know our Indigo Dyeing instructor, Ongeleigh Underwood.

How did you get started with fabric dyeing?

About 4 years ago, I was having a bad day at work. During my lunch break, I went to the downtown library and checked out armloads of books on topics that make me happy - fashion and gardening. One of those books combined the two topics -Eco Colour by India Flin. Once I got to it, I was mesmerized. I started experimenting, and bought more books. I talked to other natural dyers. The process of growing plants that brought garments and yarn to life with beautiful color was a magical escape for me. It is a delicate balance of creativity and chemistry. I was hooked.

Why do you love Chattanooga?

The city's accessibility to nature and outdoor recreation is unparalleled. It is the perfect southern big-small town, and I love watching it grow.

What's one topic you'd like to learn through The Chattery?

Vietnamese cooking.

What's something someone would be surprised to learn about you?

I play classical piano. But don't expect a concert anytime soon - I flub if anyone is listening.
